Coverlands

[wax paper and thread, with audio overture, 2008-09]
Coverlands is a sculptural installation inspired by my recent journalistic embed with U.S. forces in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. The objects in the installation reference classified maps and woven blankets sold at the bazaar on base, and highlight the army’s effort to preserve U.S. national identities – as indicated by the aesthetics of home – in a foreign environment.

The installation, form into words, contained five groups of wax paper figurines, which were three-quarter size 3-dimensional transpositions of Isotypes found on maps within the California Institute of the Arts.
